Shortly after the earthquake, we realized there was a need for children to have a safe and clean place to play. They needed a place to be a kid without the ever present reminders of the destruction that filled their every day lives. We installed a playground at our home and began to open our gates to kids from all over the community to come play. It is a place they know they are loved. It is a place for social interaction. It is a place for recreation.
When we built the playground we were not sure how it would catch on with the neighborhood but six years later it is still going strong. On any given afternoon, we can have fifty to seventy-five kids in our yard. We have added several activities to the playground in the past several years. One of the favorite additions is the soccer field. It is a challenge to keep them supplied with soccer balls but we believe it is worth the investment. They love us and we love them….we call them Our Kids.
